Global Shading Day 2024
Global Shading Day 2024 is happening on the 21st of March (the first day of spring). This special event is organised by the European Solar Shading Organisation and is something James Robertshaw is proud to be a part of.
The reason Global Shading Day exists is to raise awareness of the benefits of solar shading to a wider audience, who unfortunately might not realise the extent of the upcoming global issues we are all facing.
It’s estimated that by 2050, over 60% of all buildings in Europe will use AC for cooling. This will require +870TWhel to power, contributing to a +58% increase in CO2 emissions (equivalent to 22 million cars) with an estimated cost of Euro285b. That’s a truly staggering increase in financial and environmental costs for active cooling. It doesn't have to be that way though.
Passive cooling - the sustainable option
There is a better way to heat and cool buildings through smart solar shading. By installing passive cooling products like blinds and shutters, you can actively use nature to regulate solar glare and heat gain within a given space. This leads to:
- Zero extra CO2 emissions are being created
- Up to an estimated 62% saving on energy usage
- No extra spend on air conditioning

That is clearly something we should be aiming for and why we think it's important to spread the message of Global Shading Day to as wide an audience as possible.
We support this project through our partners at the BBSA (British Blind and Shutter Association) and their initiative for the UK ‘Blinds Make Better'. By working together with our partners and peers we can promote a more sustainable future for the heating of buildings and leave an industry-wide legacy that will serve generations to come.
If you’re supporting Global Shading Day, we’d love to hear from you. Use the hashtag #globalshadingday on social media, or contact us via our contact form.
