Traditional Victorian Box Awnings
When architects, Lovelock Mitchell, took on the task of reinvigorating Altrincham Market, they wanted to create a ‘total’ experience, with shopping, eating, drinking, and entertainment all under one roof. They chose James Robertshaw to design, manufacture and install the features of their envisioned traditional destination marketplace, from canopy tops and skirts to folding-arm market awnings to traditional box awnings – perfectly reflecting the provenance, craft and traditional values of the market.
The key challenge of this project was creating a design that would both complement and enhance the rich historical character of the market, whilst producing an architectural statement to attract passing trade. Technical site survey was started and completed within a 2 day schedule, working with both the architect and building contractor to achieve the desired result.
Installation was started and completed within a seven-day period. This consisted of 7 x traditional Victorian box awnings, ranging in sizes from 5,000mm to 7,000mm in width, all with 2,000mm projection, 6 x heavy duty folding-arm awnings, in sizes 6,215mm in width, with a 3,000mm projection, with steel frame supports and a selection of 66 x bespoke canopy top covers and market stall skirts.
The results have been incredibly well received, with Altrincham Market becoming a top destination in the North West – it was even voted ‘Best Local Market’ by Observer readers in October 2015.
